Image Guided Procedures
Interventional radiology uses imaging techniques to guide catheters and wires inside the body to open obstructed vessels, treat forms of cancers or stop internal bleeding. The small incisions used translate into shorter hospital stays, faster recovery and less pain for the patient.
• Epidurography and epidural steroid injections
• Selective nerve root injections
• Sacroiliac joint injections and facet joint injections
• Facet nerve injections and rhizotomy
Image-guided spine procedures provide physiological information not available from diagnostic imaging studies and can be performed on an outpatient basis.
• Fluoroscopy: real-time observation during contrast injection to assess for vascular opacification. CT and MR are also used for image-guided procedures.
• Early intervention helps to decrease need for pain medication, improve physical performance and facilitate a rapid return to normal activities
• With extensive training on imaging equipment safety, radiologists are best suited to perform these spine interventions
